Welcome

Welcome to De Hoendervorst, an ideal base and also the comfortable resting point to discover the beautiful city Utrecht. We would also like to tell you more about De Hoendervorst and the history of the wharf cellar.

History
De Hoendervorst is a wharf cellar from the 13th century in the middle of the city center of Utrecht. Originally, the wharf cellar were built as tunnels to connect the quay with the cellars with the houses. The tunnels were soon converted into wharf cellars that served as a storage place for merchandise such as wine, grain, peat, beer and fabrics. Over the years, De Hoendervorst has been used to serve all different kinds of purposes, for example: storage of merchandise, washing place for the linen for the hospital above, and it has been the studio of an artist. The wharf cellar was renovated in 2017 and provided with modern comfort. This makes it possible to enjoy one of the most beautiful places in Utrecht and its unique history. During the renovation we wanted to bring history back to life and at the same time look at the future by choosing sustainable facilities and materials.

Sustainability
The wharf cellar is heated by a water pump. Bamboo / cotton towels have been chosen for the “linen” and Egyptian cotton bed linen. We also looked critically at the materials when choosing the furniture. To avoid plastic waste as much as possible, disposable packaging is avoided where possible.
